Restaurants We Like
(Last Updated: 22 August 2018)
The
following is a list of restaurants that we have been to at least one time or more
and enjoyed! The content listed for each restaurant represent our experiences,
and reasons why we’d recommend them to others. What we’ve provided is not a
review, but rather the type of conversation we would have with friends to let
them know the great features the restaurant has to offer and “What we like about it.”
There
are some basic facts, too, like website, contact info, and menu. These are
subject to change, so the date we uploaded this info is the last date we
confirmed these details, and it’s the most accurate we have. We’ve provided as
much contact info as possible for each restaurant, so you might want to confirm
hours and menu if you’re thinking of checking one out!
Price Range Guide: Inexpensive ($10<),
Average ($15-20ish), Expensive ($25+)
Caribbean Supermarket’s Délicatesse
Atmosphere: There
are tables and chairs in a seating area—you can sit there to wait for your food
or stay to eat. If you’ve come to shop at the store, you can roll your cart of
purchased or unpurchased items into the bakery and pick it up when you’re
leaving. This makes it a convenient option.
Price: Inexpensive
Service: Our
experience with service is that it’s fairly fast (5-15 minute wait). You order
from one of two registers and then take your receipt to the appropriate
counter: pastry or deli. An employee will take your receipt and begin making
your order. Your number will be called when your food is ready.
Food: There’s
a variety of made-to-order options like pizza and sandwiches (normal or
toasted). They offer kibi, pate, and other side options. You’ll find a wide
variety of pastries like donuts, cake, cheesecake, muffins, etc. You can order
freshly squeezed orange juice or soft serve ice cream.
What we like about it…It’s so
easy to decide we want to eat in the bakery because it’s RIGHT THERE! We
typically make one big shopping trip per month to Caribbean Supermarket, and
it’s often tempting to eat there after we’ve purchased our groceries. Our
orders haven’t taken more than 15 minutes to prepare, and their toasted
sandwich options are varied and delicious. I almost always convince my husband
that we should get soft serve ice cream, too. It’s only 100HTG for a generous
serving (cone or cup).

Chicken Fiesta
Atmosphere: My husband and I ate at Chicken
Fiesta just the other weekend. It’s been a go-to place for me for the past
several years. The restaurant is well-known for their selection of wings, that
you can order a dozen or half-dozen of. This is typically what I order because
they’re SO GOOD. The restaurant has three different eating areas. First, they
have an indoor bottom floor. I ate inside once, and it was air-conditioned. Second,
you can walk halfway up the spiral staircase to get to the bar and two or three
tables that overlook the street. I ate on this second story once, and it’s a
nice, private area. Third, there’s the roof. This is my personal fave, and it’s
always where my husband and I eat when we go together. It’s open-air, and the restaurant
put a roof over it a few years ago. There is usually at least one projected screen
showing a game or music videos. There’s almost always music playing on the
third story.
Price: Inexpensive/Average
Service: The service is good. When you
arrive, you find a place to sit and then a waiter/waitress comes to take your
order. We normally get our drinks pretty quickly. The wait time for food is
usually 20+ minutes.
Food: The staple item is, of course, the wings.
There are 16+ to choose from including some hot and spicy options. There’s also
pizza and Chinese cuisine to choose from. Cheesecake is on the menu. I’ve never
ordered it, but I’ve heard it’s good.
What we like about it… Sadrac
and I like the atmosphere. It’s up above street level and refreshing because it’s
open-air (on the third story). If it’s not cloudy, we can view the mountains or
action on Rue John Brown below. We also like the chicken wings! Sadrac ordered
Jamaican Jerk the past few times, and they are SPICEY!! My favorite is the
honey mustard with a side of fries.
Location: 124 Avenue/Pan-Americaine/Port-au-Prince
Contact Info: (Phone): +509 2813 9866
Atmosphere: Chicky’s
has a relaxed and chill atmosphere. You walk up an outdoor set of stairs to get
to the second-story restaurant. It’s an open-air restaurant with a roof. The
lighting is dull, so it’s ideal if you’re looking for a more private date
option, or if you want to have some privacy in general. The place is not large,
and there are several booth-like tables, as well as some two and four-top
tables. There’s a bar and a TV that typically plays whatever game is on.
Price: Inexpensive
Service: The
times we went to Chicky’s, a waiter/waitress came up to us a few minutes after
arrival. Our food never took more than 30 minutes to be delivered.
Food: Chicky’s
menu is a nice variety of Haitian food, but you can also get chicken nuggets (I’ve
not found these many other places)! My favorite meal is either beef tassot or
cabrit with bannan peze. They have several drink options (including mixed
drinks).
They
have Happy Hour every Thursday from 7:00-10:00pm.
What we like about it… Chicky’s
used to be in walking distance from our apartment, so it was convenient. We
like the atmosphere because it’s cozy and we have enough privacy to have serious
conversations. The food is great, and it doesn’t break the bank.

Clay Café
Atmosphere: Clay Café has a laid-back,
Caribbean Café feel to it. The café is on the second story, and it’s open-air
with a roof. Over the past couple of years, I’ve enjoyed going to meet friends
for coffee or hanging out to use WIFI. My husband and I had our wedding
rehearsal dinner here! We pulled some tables together and enjoyed a nice meal.
Price: Inexpensive & Average Options
Service: The staff is friendly and helpful.
Once you order from the counter and pay, you can sit down and wait for your
order to come. If you plan on coming with a large group of people, the café
requests that you send your details ahead of time, so that they can prepare for
you.
Food: The café has burgers, hot dogs,
fries, and offers a variety of pizzas to choose from. For me, a highlight is
the selection of smoothies and the mocha frappe!
What we like about it… This
past summer my husband and I enjoyed using this as a meeting place for business
meetups, hangouts with friends, and for getting out of the house together. We
are sharing a vehicle, so if my husband dropped me off to hang out with a
friend, he could chill at another table and work from his computer (the WIFI
was surprisingly great this summer)!

Domino’s Pizza
Atmosphere: We’ve only ever ordered takeout.
Price: Average & Expensive
Service: Delivery is available.
Food: The pizza is a favorite of mine! I
don’t have enough Domino’s Pizza experience in the USA to compare, but it is
affiliated with it. I always order a typical cheese or pepperoni pizza, and it
has thin crust and great flavor.
What we like about it…In
my opinion, it’s just good pizza. I used to order this one whenever I had a
pizza party with my students because it was the popular request. I like that
they do delivery, and although it is pricier than some other options in the
area, it’s great pizza!

Epi D’or
Atmosphere: Epi
D’or is big inside with a few “rooms.” They’re all open but separated in a way.
There are many tables, so you should be able to find a spot to sit. It’s air
conditioned, so if you’re staying for a long period of time, you might want to
bring a sweater. The space is large, but it does echo.
Price: Inexpensive
Service: You can
order large quantities of fresh bread and appetizers like kibi and pate. It’s a
fast food setup. If you make your order during a very busy time, you might have
to wait a while. Otherwise, order and take your receipt to appropriate counter,
so that the employee working with that section can deliver your order. Service
is fairly quick unless you’re there during rush hour, but don’t count on being
served with a smile. A perk about Epi
D’or, is that you can exchange U.S. dollars for gourdes. This might save you an
extra stop.
Food: You can
find anything from fresh baguettes to pate kode. There’s a wide selection of
desserts and daily made pastries—cheesecake, donuts, pain chocolate, etc. You
can order sandwiches, pizza, crèpes,
What we like about it… Epi
D’or is well known for their fast food style. Locations are central, and the
one in Delmas is on the main drag. When we lived on Delmas, Epi D’or was our
go-to (just like street fritay!) for evenings when we didn’t feel like cooking
and just wanted to get something cheap, close, and easy. Our M.O. is for me to
order a crêpe (ham and cheese) and Sadrac getting the deli meal (usually beans,
rice, and chicken/fish, plus a vegetable side). On weekends, I like stopping by
to get their freshly made FILLED donuts or mille-feuille. Whenever we need a
baguette, we go here, too, for fresh bread. (Their bread is stocked in most
local markets like Caribbean & Giant.)

Haiku
Atmosphere: Haiku is a calm, clean, and
organized sushi restaurant. I always look forward to going to Haiku because I
know what to expect, and I know I’m going to enjoy it. When you enter the
restaurant, you have the option of sitting at a table that has a booth chair or
just a normal table. There’s a small side room, too. The restaurant usually
blasts the air conditioning, so if you’re anything like me come equipped with a
sweater or a jacket. Haiku has a parking lot behind the restaurant, and there
has always been someone outside ready to direct me to it.
Price: Average & Expensive Options
Service: The service is one of its greatest
assets from my point-of-view. Service has been reliable and consistent every
time I’m there. A waiter/waitress approaches the table as soon as we sit down,
delivers a menu and is quick to return to answer questions or take our order.
Throughout the evening, the waiter stops by the table to pick up empty dishes and
discarded chop stick papers. I’ve never waited more than 20 minutes for my food
to arrive. In fact, I’m often started off with a bowl of steaming hot miso
soup.
They
offer takeout and delivery.
Food: I love the food at Haiku. They have
a wide selection of food on their menu that includes sushi rolls, sashimi, hot
entrees, soups & salads, desserts, and more.
What we like about it…We
like the excellent service Haiku provides. There’s never a question as to whether
it will be a “good” day or “bad” day to visit. Every time I’ve gone—whether on
a date with my husband or out with friends, I’ve always found the same,
predictable service. I love the menu, although I am a creature of habit and
almost always order the same thing!

L’Appétit
Atmosphere: L’Appetit extended their outdoor
seating area, so now you have the indoor seating (with blasting AC), and
outdoor (open-air deck) to choose from. Depending on the day and my company, I’ve
experienced both areas. The restaurant is often filled with a mixture of
people—families, friends, sometimes large groups of people. My workplace rented
the deck one year, and we had it all to ourselves. There’s a parking lot.
Price: Inexpensive
Service: The service has been attentive and
timely during each of my visits. You pay at the register and then sit down to
wait for your food to be delivered. Menus of what is offered are posted on the
wall behind the register, so you have a view of everything they offer.
Food: L’Appétit has a nice variety of
food: pizza, griot, bannan peze, fries, sandwiches, desserts, smoothies, etc.
What we like about it…This
is a nice, inexpensive place to go if you want to get a quick bite to eat, or
even if you’re meeting a friend for a beer. You can order food to-go, and I’ve
done this on several occasions. Also, the place often adds new items to the
menus.

L’Estaminet
Atmosphere: The atmosphere is welcoming. There
are indoor, outdoor, and porch seating areas available. We sat outside at a
corner table for two. We went early (around 5:00, 5:30 in the evening), and the
restaurant was quiet. We had a nice, private-feeling date. Garden lights were
turned on as the sun went down. Includes a parking lot.
Price: Average&Expensive Options
Service: We had a fantastic customer service
experience. Four different employees came up to us throughout our time at the
restaurant and asked us how everything was and if it was to our satisfaction.
The service was timely, and our waitress was very friendly.
Food: The menu is multi-cuisine. Sadrac
ordered goat and was served a nice size portion, and I ordered pasta with
shrimp.
What we like about it…We
were impressed by the service. It is always a gem to experience excellent
customer service. L’Estaminet had timely and friendly customer service, and we
felt like they were truly there to serve us as their customers. We enjoyed the
atmosphere, and it was an ideal spot for us to have serious conversations and
feel like we had privacy.

La Fouchét Bar & Grill
Atmosphere: The restaurant is open-air with a
roof. There are several tables next to the pool, and we ate at one of these on
our trip to use the pool. I’ve been to La Fouchét 3-4 times, and there’s always
a mixture of restaurant-goers. Since it is located on property surrounded by
rooms for rent, there are often expats (either visiting or on contract) who
show up to eat.
Price: Average
Service: We’ve had great customer service
experiences at La Fouchét. The last time I was there was with my husband. We
decided that after work we wanted to go for a swim and grab a bite to eat. I
believe the deal was that we could spend $25 each on a meal and then gain
access to the pool. This worked well for us because it justified ordering cocktails
after dinner! Our waitress was attentive, and the manager came over to us
several times to make sure everything was to our liking.
Food: The food includes a lot of
American-style cuisine as well as some sushi and other features. I’ve gotten
something different each time: pasta, sushi, etc. My husband and I both enjoyed
the food a lot on our last visit.
What we like about it… We
were impressed by the service. We enjoyed getting to swim before and after
dinner.

La Reserve
Atmosphere: There
is porch seating (my personal favorite), bar seating, and various areas to sit
scattered about the grounds. The area is forested and cozy. In fact, all the
seating options are open-air. Includes a parking lot. Once you park in the
woodsy lot, you climb a series of stairs to get to the restaurant.
Price: Average
& Expensive Options
Service: The
service is reliable. I’ve been here multiple times with coworkers, family,
friends. The level of service was consistent each time I went, and it’s my
go-to restaurant when I have guests. I was disappointed once because my order
of choice was not on the menu.
Food: The
menu is a combination of Haitian and French cuisine.
What we like about it… The
atmosphere has a nice vibe. When you eat on the porch, you have a beautiful
view of the grounds and trees. You are outside but protected if it starts
raining. It’s relaxing and lovely.

Le Poulet D’or
Atmosphere: There’s a seating area upstairs.
There are two and four seater tables that can be pushed together if you come in
a larger group. It has a fast food feel like a McDonald’s or Burger King.
There’s a counter with some condiments including: barbecue sauce, hot sauce,
and more. Includes a parking lot across the street.
Price: Inexpensive
Service: Takeout and delivery options are
available. The service is fast! We’ve been here 3 times and have waited less
than 10 minutes each time. You are given a buzzer when you order, and it
vibrates and lights up when your order is ready.
Food: The fried chicken can be compared
to KFC. You can purchase 3 piece, 4 piece, etc.—you get the picture. There are
sides like banann peze, biscuits, and fries.
What we like about it… We’ve
stopped by here several times after running errands in Petionville. It’s super
convenient because there’s a nice parking lot and the food is ready to go
quickly. It’s a great, inexpensive meal that tastes yummy!

Pâtisserie Marie Béliard
Atmosphere: Pâtisserie Marie Béliard is a café located
in PV. Whenever I walk in the door, I breathe in the smells of the bakery and
pastries. There are two bar tables built into the walls facing the outside of
the building, so you can sit there and look out the window. There are tables
where you can sit and enjoy your lunch or dessert with a friend. There’s a
counter for picking up cakes and requesting orders to custom-made cakes. There’s
a counter for ordering sandwiches and pizza. There’s another counter for
pastries and baked goods. Once you put in your order, you go to a separate
counter with your receipt to pay. You then take your stamped receipt to a
counter where your order is fulfilled. The bakery concept was started by the
owner’s grandmother and continues in her name. There’s a lot of air
conditioning.
Price: Inexpensive & Average options
Service: The service is done well, and the
assembly-line style system for placing an order, paying for it, and then
fulfilling it, help to make it a smooth process from start to finish.
Food: If you peruse the website or visit
the café, you’ll see that this café is packed with options. You can order a
custom-made cake, or stop in for an éclair, kibi, mocha frappe, green shake,
smoothie, sandwich, pizza, or more! Everything is packed as takeout.
What we like about it…We
like the atmosphere and the way the café is run. It has a pleasant and classic café
feel to it, and the food is delicious! The last time we stopped in, I ordered a
flavorful mocha frappe with an éclair, and my husband ordered a smoothie and
kibi. Yum!

Menu (You'll find tabs to click on that show pastries, bread, and other options) Pizza Amour
Atmosphere: Pizza Amour is an outdoor
restaurant. The lawn is scattered tables (decked with colorful tablecloths),
and wooden chairs. I’ve gone to Pizza Amour with just 2-4 others and sat at one
table, but I’ve also gone with groups of 10-20 people and pulled tables
together for one big meal because the square tables fit together easily. There
are Christmas lights adorning trees that give a nice glow for lighting. A
waiter/waitress has always come to our table to take our orders and then comes
back with food/drinks when they’re ready. It’s a family-started restaurant, so
it has that feel to it. There is parking available inside the gate.
Price: Inexpensive & Average options
Service: The service is good. Everything is
brought to you.
Food: The pizza is delicious. I like the
selection of pizzas they offer, and the crust is great. (Their pizza is also
sold at Clay Café.) They’ve also got American-style salads, desserts, and
drinks on the menu.
What we like about it… We
like the atmosphere. It’s a relaxed, outdoor restaurant and sometimes there’s
been live music while we’re there. It’s a good deal for the amount of pizza you
get, and I’ve always shared a pizza with someone else or brought leftovers
home.

Wynwood
Atmosphere: The restaurant is dark lit and
there’s steady music pulsing from several speakers. You can sit inside at a
small table or at the bar, or you can take a seat outside on the sidewalk. It’s
a nice place to hangout.
Price: Inexpensive
Service: The service is friendly, and we
were immediately welcomed by the owner (a schoolmate of my husband’s) when we
entered. The waitress took our orders almost immediately after arrival, and it
took less than 20 minutes for us to get our food. The owner greeted each
customer who came through the door. We ordered mixed drinks, and a few minutes
later the owner came to let me know that he felt the drink mix in the fridge
for the piña colada was not fresh enough, and he didn’t want to serve it to me.
He reminded me of the other drink options. This stood out to me because it
demonstrated that he values quality.
Food: Griot, beef tassot, and cabrit are
the basic options, and you can choose banann peze or pomme frites as a side.
There was a special the night we went: bouillon. There is a menu for drink
options, too. We ordered beers at the beginning, and these were icy cold.
What we like about it…
We
liked the service and the food. The service was quick and thorough, and we
ended up sitting at the bar the whole time. The food was freshly made and
arrived piping hot—we ordered a second round because it was so tasty.
